Castlemore Castle rose beside the Castlemore Quarries after the MacCarthys took Muskerry in the mid-15th century, becoming one of their chief seats before the MacSweeneys, John Bayley, the Rye family and the Travers family successively touched it. Now dense growth buries its rooms and bars entry, leaving only a hidden bulk near the quarry road where heavy lorries still shake the air. What remains is less a castle than a swallowed shadow, preserving the shape of power that once occupied the land but no longer showing the people who lived it.
