Cooltrim fort stands on a Monaghan drumlin, its grassy bank and outer ditch marking a subcircular rath that has watched the land for centuries. The entrance at east-south leads across a causeway into a quiet interior where human life may have moved, breathed and forgotten itself long before written memory arrived. Its shape is simple enough to misjudge, yet the field bank and scarp suggest a boundary drawn with care.

Located on top of a drumlin. This is a subcircular grass-covered area (dims 54m E-W; 47.5m N-S) defined by a grass-covered earthen bank largely reduced to an external scarp (at SE: H 1.5m) and an outer fosse, outside of which is a field bank which might incorporate an outer bank of the rath NW-NE (at NE: Wth of base 5.5m; int. H 0.9m; ext. H 0.35m). The entrance through the inner (Wth of base 2m) bank and a causeway (Wth of top 5.5m; int. H 0.9m; H 0.5m) are at ESE.
