Five barrows cluster on a high Offaly ridge, local tradition naming the hilltop as the inauguration site for the O’Flanagans of Cinél Arga. One holds a marshy center, water trapped inside an ancient earthwork while the surrounding land drains away. Death, ceremony and memory may have occupied the same breath on that ridge, people touching wet soil before power or after life.
Located on top of high ground in mountainous area. Circular raised area (diam 16.5m; H 0.8m) enclosed by a slight bank (Wth 2m; ext. H 1m) and poorly preserved external fosse. Marshy raised interior is unusual. One of a group of five barrows (OF037-008001/002/003/005-). According to local tradition these barrows are located on a hilltop which was the inauguration site of the O’Flanagans of Cinél Arga (Feehan 1979, 143). It is possible that these burial mounds form part of a ritual landscape associated with this inauguration site.
The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Offaly' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1997). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research.

Bowl barrow, likely dating to the Early Bronze Age. Its location on high ground and the presence of a fosse suggest it may have had a ceremonial or prominent funerary role in the landscape.
