Enclosure in Coolcashin

Enclosure

What is recorded here

Coolcashin is an unnamed enclosure in County Kilkenny, Ireland. The 1839 Ordnance Survey Letters called it a large ancient Rath, yet the first edition six-inch map left it blank. That absence makes the place both larger and more dangerous, because memory can occupy what measurement refuses to show.
According to the OS Letters (1839), 'There is a large ancient Rath in this Townland [Coolcashin]' (O'Flanagan ed. 1930, vol. 1, 101 (34)). There is no enclosure indicated on the 1st (1839) ed. OS 6-inch map in this townland. This enclosure is unlcoated within Coolcashin townland. Compiled by: Jean Farrelly Date of upload: 12 February 2018
