Saint Muntchan's Catholic Church

Detached four-bay double-height single-cell Catholic church, built 1840. Pitched slate roof with clay ridge tiles, cut-limestone coping to gables having rendered gabled bellcote to apex to east (with round-headed aperture having cast-iron bell, and rendered coping having cross finial to apex), cross finial to apex to west, and cast-iron rainwater goods on slightly overhanging rendered eaves having iron brackets. Painted rendered wall to entrance (east) front with round-headed recessed stoup, and painted roughcast walls to remainder. Pointed-arch window openings with cut-stone sills, block-and-start surrounds (no surround to entrance (east) front) having hood moulding over, and eight-over-eight timber sash windows having traceried overlights (fixed-pane fitting to entrance (east) front having leaded stained glass panel). Paired pointed elliptical-headed door openings with painted block-and-start surrounds having hood mouldings over, and tongue-and-groove timber panelled double doors having overpanels. Interior with glazed timber panelled internal porch having decorative clay-tiled floor, timber pews, timber wainscoting, timber panelled gallery to first floor to east on cast-iron pillars, and decorative plasterwork ceiling roses. Set back from road in own grounds.

A picturesque modest-scale church of unassuming architectural pretensions with a single-cell plan combined with the sparse external detailing indicating a period of construction shortly following Catholic Emancipation (1829): openings incorporating finely-crafted dressings and fittings produce a muted Gothic tone enhancing the architectural design value of the composition while recalling a similar contemporary (1841) treatment in nearby Clontubbrid (12400909/KK-09-09). Having been very well maintained the church presents an early aspect with substantial quantities of the historic fabric surviving intact both to the exterior and to the interior where a range of features display high quality craftsmanship.
