Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Coolbeg

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Fairy forts are a misnomer. Humans built these rings, lived inside them, and left the soil behind. The true wonder is how quickly grass and forgetting erased the shape of their days.
On a ridge in level pastureland. Poorly preserved oval rath (33m N-S; 26.5m E-W) defined by a bank from NW to NE and from SSE to SSW; elsewhere a scarp forms the enclosing element. A gap (Wth 4.5m) at S may be original. There is a small quarry immediately outside the rath at SE. Compiled by: Galway Archaeological Survey, UCG Date of upload: 1 December 2017
