Dromcolliher is a small west Limerick village where a temporary cinema became a death chamber in 1926 when a candle touched nitrate film and forty-eight people were lost. The place also gave birth to one of Ireland’s first co-operative creameries in 1889, showing that the same crossroads could create life, pleasure and disaster. Its names keep changing, but the sharp event remains fixed: an ordinary room, a bright flame, and a whole community severed.

An archaeological excavation by Kenneth Wiggins (00E0912) between 1December 2000 and January 2001 investigated the remains of five structures which turned out to be recent in date and of no archaeological significance. Compiled by: Denis Power Date of upload: 28 February 2013
