What is recorded here

Indicated is a fairy fort or earthen ringfort in Cloonkeen (castlereagh By.), County Roscommon, Ireland. It appears faintly as a circular enclosure about twenty-five metres across on the 1837 Ordnance Survey map and sits on a gentle north-facing slope. A semicircular bank forms a D-shaped area cut by an east-west field wall at the south, with a hut-site against the inside of the bank at the north. The site is no longer visible at ground level in reclaimed pasture, while Rath lies about ninety metres to the southwest.

Marked faintly as a circular enclosure (diam. c. 25m) on the 1837 ed. of the OS 6-inch map, and situated on a gentle N-facing slope. Described as a D-shaped area defined by a semicircular bank W-N-E cut by an E-W field wall at S with a hut-site (RO026-009002-) against the inside of the bank at N (Gannon 1972). It is not now visible at ground level in reclaimed pasture. Rath (RO026-011001-) is c. 90m to the SW. Compiled by: Michael Moore Date of upload: 24 August 2010
