Indicated

Enclosure

What is recorded here

Indicated is a lost circular enclosure on an east-facing ridge in County Mayo, visible only on an 1838 map and now hidden beneath pasture. It may have been a ringfort, a place where people lived, argued, loved and forgot the shape of their own walls. The land keeps its margin beside marsh and sky, waiting for someone to remember what it held.
On E-facing slope of ridge, in pasture, with marsh to E. Shown on OS map (1838) as circular enclosure. Levelled; no visible surface traces. Possibly a ringfort. The above description has been derived from D. Lavelle (compiler), An Archaeological Survey of Ballinrobe and District including Lough Mask and Lough Carra. Lough Mask and Lough Carra Tourist Development Association (1994), No. 341. Date of upload: 5 November 2013

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
