Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Cloghboola More

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Fairy fort in Cloghboola More, County Cork: a circular earthen ringfort, roughly 36 metres across, with two banks about 1.25 metres high and a 4-metre fosse between them. It sits on an NE-facing slope in rough grazing land, heavily overgrown, with a 3.5-metre entrance to the NE and a disused trackway running down from it. The inner bank is littered with loose stones on both sides. Whether it was a home, a boundary marker, or a place people avoided after dark, the shape still reads as made rather than accidental.
In rough grazing land, on NE-facing slope, on SW side of stream valley. Heavily overgrown, circular area (c. 36m NW-SE) defined by two earthen banks (H c. 1.25m) with intervening fosse (Wth 4m). Entrance (Wth 3.5m) to NE; each side of inner bank littered with loose stones; disused trackway runs down slope from entrance. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 3: Mid Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1997). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
