Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Cloghboola Beg

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Fairy forts are not fairy forts at all. They are discarded human ringforts, misnamed because people stopped remembering the hands that built them. Cloghboola Beg keeps that warning inside a quarter acre of earth on Wm. Murphy's land. The fort is no longer locatable, but its absence does not erase the shape it once forced upon the field.
According to Broker (1937, 45) 'fort, 1/4 acre' on Wm. Murphy's land. Exact location not known. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 3: Mid Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1997). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
