Aughavinna Fort

Aughavinna Fort is a suboval earthen ringfort in County Clare, built during the early medieval period as an enclosed farmstead. Its eastern bank still stands about a metre high beside a shallow ditch, but the western edge simply stops where the land drops into the Aille River ravine. The builders apparently trusted that steep natural barrier to keep out trouble, leaving humans to walk past three later cattle gaps and a wire fence that now crosses the southern ditch.
