Aharinagh Castle

Aharinagh Castle is a ruined medieval tower house perched on a rocky outcrop above the Atlantic coast near Ballybrack in County Clare. Built perhaps in the fifteenth or sixteenth century for a local Gaelic family, its rectangular stone walls rose three or four storeys high, with narrow defensive windows and a fireplace for the living quarters above. Storms and time have taken much of it, but the remaining walls still stand proud on the limestone, offering a quiet glimpse into the fortified lives of Ireland’s medieval past.
