What is recorded here
Grave Yd is a D-shaped graveyard on the west bank of the River Lee in County Cork, holding the ruined parish church of Aghinagh and graves dating back to 1773. People still walk its stones, including the marked grave of Rev. John Callaghan and the locally believed burial place of Bishop MacEgan. Outside its east wall lies the elaborate plot of Sir Adrian Cartan de Wiart, who died in 1963. The place remains quietly alive, linking ordinary deaths, clerical memory and one unusual foreign name beside the river.
On S side of roadway, close to W bank of River Lee; roughly D-shaped graveyard (48m E-W; 42m N-S; see plan, Henchion 1967, 102) enclosed by stone wall. N of centre is ruin of C of I parish church of Aghinagh (CO071-102002-), on or near site of earlier parish church. In occasional use; memorial inscriptions recorded by Henchion (1967, 103-15), earliest inscribed headstone dated 1773, some chest tombs, also many low uninscribed gravemarkers. Rounds made at grave of Rev. John Callaghan, located to S of church; also rounds made at another grave to W said locally to be burial place of Bishop MacEgan (Hartnett 1939, 95; Hartnett 1947, 9-10; Henchion ibid., 118-9). Outside E wall of graveyard is elaborate burial plot of Sir Adrian Cartan de Wiart, who died in 1963.
