Cannaway, Ireland. Grave markers cluster around an empty centre where no wall, stone or foundation breaks the grass. The church vanished before memory, leaving only the shape of its absence for the dead to orbit.

In the centre of a graveyard (CO071-108002-), the site of the ancient parish church of Cannaway; no visible surface trace. Church here in ruins by 1639; in 1700 only half the walls were standing (Brady 1863, vol. 1, 55-6). The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. The church at Bawnatemple was likely built in the medieval period, with records showing it in ruins by 1639; it served as the ancient parish church of Cannaway and was dedicated to an unidentified saint. Its remains were partially visible as late as 1700, indicating its local religious and historical significance.
