Standing stone in Castletown (connello Upper By.)

Standing stone

What is recorded here

Denis Power documented the site in 2011, revealing a sandstone upright leaning southward on a pasture slope. The carved names P.S., T.M., and J. McCarthy suggest recent human hands rather than ancient mystery. The stone may mark a boundary, a memory, or a local joke, but it still stands witness to the living area.
In pasture, on a break in a SSE-facing hill slope. A sandstone upright (H 1.5m; Wth 0.55m; T 0.12m), leaning 15 degrees to the S, with its long axis aligned E-W. An inscription on its S face reads "P.S./T.M./J. McCarthy/Cast"; the latter is probably an abbreviation of the townlands name. The inscription suggests that the stone was erected or re-erected at a recent date. Compiled by: Denis Power Date of upload: 26 August 2011
