What is recorded here

Nine hectares of vanished fences still shadow the Castlemagner soil, their rectilinear marks cutting across modern boundaries like a forgotten language. A ringfort and two ring-ditches sit trapped inside the ghost grid, suggesting people farmed around rather than avoided the old defences. The land remembers a different axis of ownership and labour, preserving shapes no longer visible from the ground.

Regular pattern of rectilinear cropmarks, some perpendicular, visible in aerial photograph (CASAP, July 1989). Cropmarks cover area of c. 9ha and indicate relict field system on different axis to present system. Ringfort (CO024-10601-) transected on E-W axis by cropmark of fence. Ring-ditches (CO024-225---; CO024-226---) and circular enclosure (CO024-10603-) all within field system. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork.
