Castle, unclassified

What is recorded here

Knocknagorteeny Castle vanished before it was ever properly seen, leaving behind a townland name and a doubt. Grants appeared in 1552, 1562 and 1592, yet no wall, gate or room has been identified to prove they belonged to one place. The castle may have been small, temporary or never built at all, existing only in the claims of people who wanted land marked as theirs.
The precise location of Knocknagorteeny Castle within the townland has not been identified. Possible castle site described by Westropp (1906-7, 100) as following; 'See 1552, 1562, 1592 grants. C[astle]. named in Inq. Exch., 36. Townland only in Surveys (C.S., xxx., p. 2). A doubtful site'. Compiled by: Caimin O'Brien Date of upload: 14 January 2020
