Carduff Castle appeared in 1583 under Brien Roo O'Brien of Lackyn, but its stones may have vanished or never existed at all. The name reappeared in 1615 when Tha: O'Brien of Attyflin held it, suggesting a live property rather than a phantom. It may be the Cahermore at Barniard and Ballybeg, not the Caherduff near Monasteranenagh. The castle exists only in the gap between those two claims.

The precise location of Caherduff Castle has not been identified. Westropp (1906-07, 148) recorded the following details about Caherduff Castle; '1583 Carduff C[astle]. (Des. R.). Brien Roo O'Brien, of Lackyn, held it (Peyton, 215b). 1615 Tha: O'Brien of Attyflin held it (Inq. Chan., 15). Possibly the Cahermore at Barniard and Ballybeg (C.S., p. 25).
