Castle

Castle, unclassified

What is recorded here

Coolatrath east and west still circle an absent castle, preserving a boundary the structure itself failed to keep visible. Whether it stood as a private seat, a military post, or a boundary marker, that uncertainty gives the place more life than a confident label would. The name survived the loss of the building, turning forgetfulness into a challenge: to imagine what shape the land is still remembering.
The Civil Survey (1654-6) records the existence of a castle at 'Coolotrath' (Simington 1945). Not precisely located. Compiled by: Geraldine Stout Date of upload: 26 August 2011

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
