Carrownlough stands in County Mayo as a motte and bailey castle, its earthworks shaped for defense rather than display. The distinction matters because a true motte raises a building above the surrounding land, giving height, sight and advantage. That much is clear from the name and form. The rest belongs to the place itself: grass, rain, time and the people who first shaped the ground.
