Indicated

Earthwork

What is recorded here

Indicated is an earthwork in Carroweighter, County Roscommon, Ireland. It sits towards the bottom of the S-facing slope at the SE end of a NW-SE ridge beside the church of Oran. The circular graveyard surrounding that church expanded west to the N 60 road and north to a field bank. This growth destroyed earthwork features previously marked on the 1929 OS map and described by O'Donovan as house foundations.
Towards the bottom of the S-facing slope at the SE end of a NW-SE ridge. A circular graveyard (RO034-080002-) surrounds the church of Oran (RO034-080001-), but the graveyard has now expanded W to a N-S section the N 60 road and N to a field bank (max. dims c. 150m N-S; c. 200m E-W). The expanded graveyard has destroyed earthwork features in this area marked on the 1929 ed. of the OS 6-inch map, and described by O'Donovan c. 1837 as house foundations (O'Flanagan 1931, vol. 1, 61).
