What is recorded here

Gallan is a 1.4m irregular standing stone on a gentle north-facing slope in County Cork, hidden in overgrowth and absent from both the 1842 and 1904 OS maps. It may be the stone Bowman mentioned on E. Butler's land in 1934, though that remains a possibility rather than a certainty. The fact that surveyors passed it twice without marking it suggests either careless drawing or deliberate forgetting, and the stone has spent more than a century belonging to neither record nor memory.

Not marked on 1842 and 1904 OS 6-inch maps. In overgrowth, on gentle N-facing slope. Stone (H 1.4m; 1m x 0.25m) is irregular in shape, long axis NW-SE. Possibly stone referred to by Bowman (1934, 569) on E. Butler's land in this townland. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork.
