Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Carn (rathconrath By.) is a fairy fort or earthen ringfort in Carn (rathconrath By.), County Westmeath, Ireland. Described in 1971, the roughly circular earthwork measured 37.5 metres east-west and 35 metres north-south, and was enclosed by a bank and an external ditch. The bank stood 0.7 metres high on its exterior face, while a wide gap at the east presumably represented the entrance.
Situated on a small steep rocky knoll, in gently undulating pasture, with good views in all directions. Monument described in 1971 as a roughly circular-shaped area (dims. 37.5m E-W; 35m N-S) enclosed by a bank and external fosse, a wide gap at E presumably represents the entrance. The bank (ext. H 0.7m) is high and steep on the exterior although it is low on the interior, having the remains of an internal stone facing at NW and ESE. There is a modern gap in the bank at NE. There are very slight remains of an outer fosse which is partly obscured around the outer edge by a modern stone wall. The interior rises gently from the perimeter to the centre where there is a house site (WM024-127001-). Immediately inside the ringfort bank at NNW are slight remains of an earth and stone radial bank (approx. L 4-5m) and there are similar remains at SE.
