Cairn

Cairn, boundary cairn

What is recorded here

On the western peak of the Paps of Dana, a prehistoric oval cairn sits beneath a modern pile of visitor stones, its original kerb buried under centuries of interference. People took stones to build a shelter, returned them after inspection, and kept adding heaps until the ancient boundary became a layered record of human curiosity. The twin hills still suggest a reclining female form, giving the mound a mythic address even as rubble spills down the slopes.
Atop Strickeen mountain. One of three cairns (see KE065-133001-, KE065-133003-) placed close together in a S/N line on the top of the spur. The cairn consists of a heap of loose stones (diam. 3.5m; H 1.3m). Compiled by: Matt Kelleher Date of upload: 06 February 2012
