Bush Island

Crannog

What is recorded here

Bush Island is a small, ancient crannog sitting alone in Lough Tacker, far enough from the shore to demand purpose and faith from whoever first built it. Its circular shape and distance suggest a lived place rather than a decorative one, where people may have watched water, kept animals, hidden tools or simply made the lake their own. The story is not grand, but it is clear: human hands reached into the wet dark and formed a small world of their own.
An almost circular tree-and-grass-covered island (diam. c. 16m) in Lough Tacker, c. 160m from the shoreline. Known in the locality as an antiquity. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cavan' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1995). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 22 December 2008
