Burnt mound in Cloghvally Lower

Discovered prior to road construction (Excavation Licence No. 03E1255) and situated on the S bank of a small meandering stream at a point where it changes from a SW-NE to NW-SE flow. The excavation of burnt mound material (dims 9. 5m x 6.25m; max. T 0.4m) revealed no other features which would have been eroded by the stream. It did provide a calibrated C14 date of 1877-1537 Cal. Burnt mound, Late Neolithic or Early Bronze Age. This site represents a common type of ritual or industrial structure, often associated with heat-related activities such as cooking, hide processing, or ceremonial use.
