Burial ground in Whitehall

Burial ground

What is recorded here

Whitehall holds a children's burial ground on its north side, though the exact spot has slipped from memory. The loss was so common the community stopped measuring it and began accepting it. That is the true horror of history; not monsters, but ordinary people adapting to extraordinary suffering.
'At north side' [of the townland] is a children's burial ground '(O'Donoghue 1986, 18). Exact location not known. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 1: West Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1992). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
