What is recorded here
Killvickanease preserves an early church burial ground beside the Bregoge stream, where a curving boundary and low field undulations still mark the edge of a forgotten enclosure. Jones heard that an uncle of the present owner struck an abundance of bones while sinking a drain, a mundane act that opened a chamber of dead people. Power tentatively linked the place to Cill Mainches, chief church of the Tuath O nDuinnin, giving the field a name worthy of pride. The bones may belong to farmers, priests, children or travellers; the earth kept them without asking whether they were important.
Jones (1902, 235), suggesting townland name pointed to 'religious origin', made enquiries locally and was informed that 'an uncle of the present owner found an abundance of bones here when sinking a drain.' No further information given regarding location. Power (1932, 121) notes 'an early church site, beside a farmhouse on E bank of the Bregoge stream.' Probably in tillage field to S of farmhouse in SW corner of townland. Curving field boundary (C c. 80m) to N may indicate perimeter of enclosure; scarp (H 2m) NW->N; earthen field fence (H 1m) N->E. Low undulations in field c. 60m to S. Power (ibid., 30, 121) tentatively identifies site with 'Cill Mainches', chief church of the Tuath O nDuinnin.
