Gallowshill on the southern outskirts of Kilkenny City holds a disturbed burial ground where quarrying exposed human remains in 1969 and 1975. One shallow pit contained a partly articulated skeleton aligned west-northwest to east-southeast, while a small circular mound on the quarry surface incorporated disarticulated bones from surrounding graves. The stones and soil may have marked a place where neighbours laid out the dead before the land was taken for stone.
On a prominent esker on the southern outskirts of Kilkenny City. Human remains were found during quarrying in 1969 with further burials (KK019-105001-) coming to light in 1975. The burials were all inhumations in a very disturbed context. One shallow pit containing a partly articulated skeleton was aligned WNW-ESE. A small circular mound (KK019-105----), noted on the surface of the quarry, proved to be a modern landscape feature with disarticulated bones from the surrounding graves incorporated in the mound material. (Ryan, M. 1975 Gallowshill. Mound. S 6055. Available at: http://www.excavations.ie [accessed 11 February 2013]). Testing in the area in 2005 failed to uncover anything of archaeological interest.
