Burial ground in Cloniffeen

Unlocated burials within the townland of Cloniffeen (Cahill & Sikora 2011, vol. 2, 506). According to the National Museum of Ireland files in June 1963 a report was received stating that human remains had been discovered over a period of two weeks at Bord na Mona power station near Shannonbridge, Co. Offaly in the townland of Cloniffeen. According to the report between sixteen and twenty-four skeletons were discovered, all orientated in the same direction (orientation not specified), approximately 0.46m below ground level. A piece of iron, possibly a knife, was allegedly found with the burials but was not acquired. The site manager, Mr Lee, was asked to re-bury the remains locally, and the site was not investigated (NMI file).
