Burial Ground

Associated with a medieval church (CL0160105001-). Named ‘Burial Ground’ on the 1840 ed. of the OS 6-inch map and ‘Grave Yd.’ on the 1916 ed., this roughly subrectangular graveyard (70m E-W) varies in width from 14m across the W end, to 17m across the centre and 11m across the E end. It is defined by a drystone wall (H 1.5m). Access is gained from the roadside via a gateway and stile at the SW corner. The W half of the interior is fairly level but the E half slopes to the E. Most of the burials date to the 19th and 20th centuries but numerous uninscribed grave-markers are indicated by small stone uprights. Most of the older graves are found in the E half and several of them have collapsed, leaving rectangular depressions in the ground. The graveyard is still in use. The church is centrally located within it. A number of architectural fragments from it have been reused in some of the graves. Just to the NW of the church, two curving cut-stone fragments, possibly from a pointed or round-headed arched doorway, that were lying flat on a grave when inspected in May 1999 have subsequently been set upright on the grave (Large 2010) and, nearby, a grave-marker consists of a dressed stone that was possibly part of a door jamb. A possible ecclesiastical enclosure (CL016-105004-) is associated and a holy well (CL016-105003-) lies c. 140m to the WSW. The following images have been uploaded: CL016-105002-_01jpg.
