Bullaun stone in Modreeny

Originally from St. Keran's church, Modreeny (TN010-084001), this bullaun is presently at the front of St Michael and John's Roman Catholic church, situated to SE of Cloghjordan village (TN016-005). The bullaun rests on a plinth of reused late limestone blocks. It has been cemented onto this and the external wall of the church. The bullaun is of conglomerate stone. It has a central depression in a roughly circular boulder. The circular depression is 0.15m D, 0.4m x 0.36m W and the boulder itself is 0.36m H, 0.82m x c.0.72m W.

This bullaun stone likely dates to the early Christian period in Ireland, associated with monastic or ecclesiastical sites. It may have been used for ritual purposes, such as the preparation of holy water or as a pilgrim's basin, and is linked to local Christian traditions and possibly prehistoric sacred practices.
