What is recorded here
Lisroe, the russet ringfort, stands forty-five metres wide in low-lying Bromore West, its earthen bank still rising two metres above the marshy ground. The main road now cuts through what was once a complete circle, leaving only a broken semicircle and a faint ditch behind. People may have lived inside this red-earth wall before fields and traffic swallowed the rest, but the soil remembers the shape even when the story has faded.

Lisroe/Lios Rua (russet ringfort). Situated in low-lying land, the main Ballybunnion-Beal road runs in a SW-NE direction, cutting this site from the NE to S. All that remains of the site today is a sub-semicircular area enclosed by an earthen bank and exterior fosse. A fieldbank runs from the S to the SW and W; this is possibly part of this univallate rath. An earthen ridge runs in an E-W direction from the end-curve of the earthern bank eastwards. S of this is a triangular area of marshy land. The exterior height of the bank measures 1.8m and the interior 1.2m. On average the width of the bank at the base measures 4m. A very slight exterior fosse is evident around the earthen bank that remains; it measures .8m wide and .5m deep. Five small breaks appear in the bank, but they would all appear to be secondary.
The above description is derived from C. Toal, ‘North Kerry Archaeological Survey’. Dingle. Brandon in association with FAS Training and Employment Authority (1995), no. 216. In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research.
