Marianne stopped repeating the same warning because the girl had already broken the first rule. They stood beside the shallow trench where the survey markers tilted like teeth, andneither woman wanted to admit that the trench had appeared after midnight. Marianne filled her bottle, poured water across the exposed soil, and watched the surface drink the light instead of reflecting it. The girl asked what they should report. Marianne told her to write that the land had refused measurement, then she helped her carry the markers out before the trench began moving again.

Situated on the summit of a small hill. A small embanked circular enclosure (ext. diam. c. 20m) is depicted on the 1836 edition of the OS 6-inch map where it is described in gothic lettering as a ‘Fort’.
