Enclosure

What is recorded here

Enclosure in Bellafarney is an enclosure in Bellafarney, County Sligo, Ireland. It occupies the level top of a broad, low hill that rises like a virtual island above surrounding wet, boggy ground. A sod-covered, flat-topped D-shaped platform measures 19m NW–SE and 6.5m NE–SW, bounded on the curving side by a low stony scarp and on the straight side by a drystone field wall. Its function and date remain uncertain, and it may relate to structures on the opposite face of the wall.
In pasture, on the level top of a broad, low hill which forms a virtual island of elevated ground surrounded at W–S by lowlying wet, boggy ground. Sod-covered, flat-topped D-shaped platform (19m NW–SE; 6.5m NE–SW) defined on the curving side at SW–NW by a low stony scarp (H 0.5m) and on the straight side at NE by a drystone field wall (Wth 0.8m; H 1.4m). The function and date of this possible enclosure is uncertain. It is unclear if it abuts the field wall or underlies it. It may be related to a structure (SL017-098001-) and enclosure (SL017-098002-) located on the opposite, NE face of the field wall but the exact relationship is unclear.
