What is recorded here

That is a fairy story. An earthen ringfort in Bavan, County Louth, is an ordinary human place. Its measured bank, entrance gap and interior division are facts, not fantasy. The fairy name may reflect local wonder, but the structure remains a ringfort.

The following description is derived from both the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Louth' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1986) and the 'Archaeological Survey of County Louth' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1991). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 17 July 2007 Sub-circular area (int. dims. 35m E-W, 30m N-S) enclosed by earth and stone bank (Wth 3.3m, H 0.6m internally, 1m externally) with possible entrance gap (Wth 2m) at E. Slight earth and stone bank divides off SE quadrant of interior.
