Killeen

The OS Letters (1839) mention that there is, ‘a piece of land in the Townland of Barrowmount called Killeen, in which there must have been a little Church from which the name was derived’ (O’Flanagan 1930, vol. 2, 23 (9)). This is speculation based on the name ‘Killeen’ which according to the OS Letters, ‘is a “small Church” or graveyard’ and is associated with, ‘a piece of land containing about ten or twelve acres’ (ibid. 26-7 (10)). The OS Letters dismiss any association with the ‘Grave Yard’ indicated on the 1st (1839) ed. OS 6-inch map, c. 275m NE of Brookhill House, as this graveyard dates to c. 1800 when a vault was constructed by a member of the Gore family and in the enclosing area, ‘a few only of the servants of the family were interred’ (ibid.).
