Balrath Demesne in County Meath held a compact medieval town where straight ditches cut across a slight north-facing slope. The settlement stretched two hundred metres east to west and one hundred fifty metres north to south, with a rectangular enclosure at its heart. Stone structures still mark the centre, while discarded tools and broken pots may have filled the dirt around them. People lived there long enough to build walls, dig channels and change the shape of the land.

Situated on a slight N-facing slope. A geophysical survey (09R207) identified numerous potential archaeological features in a development site of about 18 ha (c. 45 acres). Archaeological testing (09E0544) confirmed that a concentrated area of features (dims c. 200m E-W; x c. 150m N-S) constituted a medieval settlement area. It comprised numerous ditches in rectilinear patterns. It is largely within a rectangular enclosure (dims c. 130m NW-SE; c. 80m NE-SW) defined by ditches (Wth 2-4m; D 0.3-1m) with stone structures at its centre.
