Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Ballyvouskill

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Ballyvouskill Mountain holds a twenty-metre earthen ring on a steep northeast slope, marked by a sudden scarp and a possible hidden passage. It is no longer a home for people, but the shape still fits a chamber where breath might echo back. The fairy name warns that the ground keeps its own rules, and the hill has waited patiently for someone foolish enough to enter.
In pasture, on break in steep NE-facing slope of Ballyvouskill Mountain. Slightly raised, subcircular area (diam. c. 20m) defined on NE side by steep-sided scarp. Possible Man-made underground passage (8962) in interior. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 3: Mid Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1997). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
