Rathduff was a circular fairy fort in County Mayo, large enough for a family and old enough to predate every human claim on the land. Farmers levelled it for pasture, believing they were freeing useful ground, but they were only removing the visible edge of an older agreement. The flat grass above it still marks a boundary between the human world and the hidden life that continues beneath it.

In pasture, on a slight rise in an area of level ground surrounded by rolling terrain. The River Deel, which marks the S boundary of the townland, is 250m to SE. This enclosure, most likely a rath, is named ‘Rathduff’ on the 1838 and 1922 OS 6-inch maps. It has been levelled, but it is still possible to trace the outline of a roughly circular, slightly raised area (c. 25m N–S; c. 22m E–W) defined by a broad, low scarp.
