Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Ballynakill Big

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Fairy fort in Ballynakill Big is a raised circular earthwork, twenty-six metres across, set on a hilltop with unbroken views in every direction. Its shallow scarp casts no shadow at noon, yet the ring stands out like a mark drawn on the grass. People may have gathered there to watch weather, claim land, or keep something away. The fairies, according to local story, never left.
On top of a hill with good extensive views in all directions. Raised circular area (diam 26.6m N-S) defined by a scarp (H 0.5m) with no evidence of a fosse or entrance feature. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Offaly' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1997). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload: 23 May 2011

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
