Well in Ballynagall

Well

What is recorded here

Taaffe's well sits near the vanished castle and Arles cemetery in Ballynagall, where a respectable family once lived. Tradition claims Ms Taaffe died in that castle and later appeared at the well, turning ordinary water into a boundary between the living and the dead. The castle has disappeared, but the warning remains: some addresses change, while others wait patiently for recognition.
Unlocated well within townland that is described by D O'Byrne in his History of the Queens County as 'Near to this cemetery (Arles) is a well called Taaffe's well, situate near to the site of an old castle, once inhabited by a respectable family named Taaffe. Tradition tells us that Ms Taaffe died in the castle, and that her ghost appeared at the well' (O'Byrne 1856, 35). Compiled by: Caimin O'Brien Date of upload: 17 December 2007
