New Castle in ruins — Report the wrong picture

New Castle in Farnans, County Laois, vanished around 2000 after appearing on maps since 1841. The land now holds only a slight rise and faint traces of a six-metre fosse, while the castle itself has surrendered its stones to memory. What remained of its walls, rooms and purpose has gone, leaving behind a quiet gap in the countryside where a building once stood.

Marked on the 1841 and 1906 editions of the OS 6-inch maps. Situated in undulating countryside. No visible surface remains. Destroyed approx. 10 yrs ago. Castle site indicated by a slight rise in the ground, slight evidence of a fosse (Wth 6m) at W, N and NE. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Laois' (Dublin Stationery Office, 1995) compiled by P. David Sweetman, Olive Alcock and Bernie Moran.
