Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Ballymurphy North

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Ballymurphy North: local tradition still calls it a fort, though only a shallow depression remains in the field. Seventy metres away lies a fulacht fiadh, its hot stones and trenches forgotten but once busy with boiling water and shared food. The two marks suggest people gathered there repeatedly, perhaps for feasts, work or rituals, before the earth softened the edges and story took over fact.
According to local tradition site of "fort"; marked by depression in centre of field. Fulacht fiadh (CO085-061---) lies 70m to SSW in same field. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 2: East and South Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1994). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
