Settlement deserted

Medieval Lea collapsed back into the Barrow floodplain after repeated Offaly raids, leaving only faint ditches and one enormous ash tree that people still danced around in the nineteenth century. The town served royal armies and local lords before waste and fire erased most of it, yet the memory kept reappearing in fairs, planting stories, and field names. What is missing is not secrecy but ordinary decay: houses, streets, and certainty all dissolved together.
