Burial ground in Ballylongane

Burial ground

What is recorded here

No stones, ditch or fence remain in Ballylongane, yet the buried ground is still written on old maps. People may have stopped laying the dead there before the surveyors came, not because the place was forgotten but because life had moved elsewhere. What is missing is not understanding. The field has simply taken the marks back.
Though marked on the 1841-42 and 1916 OS map as 'Burial Ground (disused)' no surface trace survives today. The above description is derived from C. Toal, ‘North Kerry Archaeological Survey’. Dingle. Brandon in association with FAS Training and Employment Authority (1995), no. 870. In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload: 3 August 2013
