Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Ballykerwick

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Fairy fort in Ballykerwick, County Cork: a 48 m earthen ring on a south-facing pasture slope, its bank 1 m high inside and 3.5 m outside. People called it a fairy fort, but it is an earthen ringfort, a rath, likely made and used by humans long before folklore gave it that name. It may have held homes, tools or warnings about passing danger; the fairies belong only to the story told beside it.
In pasture, on S-facing slope. Circular raised area (diam. 48m) defined by earthen bank (int. H 1m; ext. H 3.5m). The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 3: Mid Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1997). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
