Excavation

Identified in centre-line testing (E4110) in advance of the M11 Gorey to Enniscorthy road scheme and set aside for resolution as Ballydawmore 6 (Hardy et al. 2010, 83-4). It is situated at the bottom of a N-facing slope with a small S-N stream c. 130m to the W. Full excavation (E4266) by M. McNamara recorded an oval pit (dims 4.3m E-W; 1.35m N-S; D 0.14m) with two fills, the upper of which had charcoal. Three small pits (dims 0.35m x 0.22m; D 0.1m: 0.35m x 0.25m; D 0.08m: 0.45m x 0.3m; D 0.15m) and a post-hole were within 5-6m of the large pit. No artefacts were recovered but a sample from the upper fill of the large pit produced a C14 date of Cal. BC 1379-1190 BC. The cairn (WX020-109001-), structure (WX020-109002-) and enclosure (WX020-109003-) are c. 150m to the SSE. (McNamara 2012; 2013) Compiled by: Michael Moore Date of upload: 28 November, 2013
