Structure

A series of stakes and some brushwood (Wth 1.7m; D 0.6m) at the base of the drain and in the adjacent drain face. The stakes (L 0.3m min.; diam. 0.022-0.052m) occur at angles of 30-80°. A clear arrangement or alignment of stakes cannot be determined. Woodworking is apparent on a number of pieces. Wood species identified are predominantly ash, with oak and birch also recorded. The wood sits in well-humified Sphagnum peat containing frequent Eriophorum and ericaceous remains. Recorded by the Irish Archaeological Wetland Unit (University College, Dublin) in 1996. The evidence is not sufficient to warrant its acceptance as the remains of an archaeological monument.
